22nd Annual Clay, Glass & Metal Show
ROYAL OAK, MI – It’s summer in Michigan, a season well-known for construction — and art shows. And while construction spans the community, Washington Avenue is open once again, ready to host the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd Annual Clay, Glass & Metal Show.
But the Clay, Glass & Metal Show is a unique art show, featuring only works created from the earth using heat and fire. In addition, it’s an award-winning event that showcases fine art, with artists juried in and only the most skilled artisans selected to participate. And the Royal Oak Chamber has been bringing it to the community for 22 years.
“Though the Chamber is fundamentally a member-based business organization, we also promote Royal Oak by organizing community events that connect us to civic organizations, residents and visitors alike,” stated Executive Director Shelly Kemp. “And the various expressions of “Art” are important to our community. We have artwork displayed throughout the downtown, a concert series in the summer and the Celebration of the Arts event held at annually at the beginning of June.”
But when strolling Washington Avenue, there’s more to the event than just browsing and shopping fine art. Over 12 demonstrations will take place over the weekend, a unique feature of this event. So whether you are an art connoisseur or just browsing, you can discover first-hand how these pieces are made. In some cases, you can even enjoy a hands-on experience or take home a piece you craft yourself!
Demonstrations at this year’s event include an opportunity to watch metal being forged, tile pressing and tile decorating, glass work into floral pendants, jewelry and forms as well as sculptor who craft figurative pieces live at the event. In addition, aspiring artists can learn to create a bunny with a pipe clearer, make origami crane earrings or design their own stained glass work to take home — for a small fee.
Young attendees can learn how to work with metal and also stop by the Friends of the ROPL to create their own mosaic art piece. And as always, the Path to Emagination Mosaic project, sponsored jointly by The Royal Oak Chamber and Emagine Royal Oak, gives attendees a chance to add a piece to the design as part of the ongoing community art project.
“Learning how it’s made helps us truly appreciate the artists’ work and their creations … and it can inspire future artists too,” stated Kemp. “It makes this show unique.”
The 22nd Annual Clay, Glass & Metal Show will run thru the heart of Royal Oak’s downtown, inviting shoppers to experience fun or fine dining at any of Royal Oak’s popular restaurants. Or, they can partake in
